Creative Arts

A subject that is very much at the beating heart at Falcons Prep, music fills the school building with sound and creativity each day of the school week. In class lessons across every year group, boys explore a broad variety of genres, from classical to contemporary, using state-of-the-art digital technology to access the latest approaches to learning and creating music.

Music Technology itself is taught in every year group but is also available as an after school activity twice a week, composing on iPads providing sequenced soundtracks from movie, animation and computer game projects.

Specialist tutors enable boys to take their interests and talents a step further. Individual lessons for string, brass, keyboard, voice, percussion, guitar and woodwind are held on a weekly basis along with ensemble tuition for choir, guitar group and the school orchestra. Further ensemble provision is made for boys pursuing their interest in contemporary music, with various band rehearsals at lunchtimes and after school.

Boys also have many opportunities to develop their performance skills, including our weekly singing practice assembly, the end-of-term Prize Giving celebrations and our annual House Music Competition. Their vocal talents can also be heard in the community at the local carol singing and a biannual Choir Tour.

Our fully equipped art studio provides an enriching and engaging environment for all year groups to learn a variety of artistic skills including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles and sculpture.

Learning about artists, art history and cultures is contextually instilled in the practical aspects of art, and technology also plays an important role in lessons, with a full suite of Adobe software and a bank of iPads available in the Innovation Hub.

Photography has been added to the curriculum this year as a carousel for Years 7 and 8, and our new equipment and editing software allows boys to create fine art prints in a studio photography setting.

All year groups go on at least two art trips each year and have the chance to join an after-school art club. Selected pupils are also invited to an art scholarship session in which we build a portfolio for potential 13+ art scholarship.

Through Drama, boys are encouraged to explore their imaginations and given a safe space to develop their creative and artistic minds. Our varied curriculum covers topics such as mime, physical theatre, improvisation, play text analysis, devising theatre, animal studies, puppetry and character development.

Boys take part in various English and Drama workshops, which are provided by some of London’s first-rate Theatre in Education groups. Trips enable pupils to experience theatre production across London, from the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond and Richmond Theatre to the Lyric in Hammersmith and the historic venues of the West End. Recent productions we have seen include Lord of the Flies, Wicked, The Winter’s Tale, East is East and The Woman in Black.

We put on three of our own productions in a local theatre every year. All boys have the opportunity to participate in a workshop-style audition for parts and every boy throughout the whole school is involved. Our current schedule is to perform a Shakespeare or classic text with Years 7 and 8, musical theatre with Years 5 and 6, and musical theatre or pantomime with Years 3 and 4.

Boys who are more interested in the technical side of theatre assist on our various productions, with instruction on how to operate sophisticated theatrical light and sound equipment as well as the skills behind set design, stage management and prop making.

For boys who want to do more drama, we offer private LAMDA lessons, which take place once a week for thirty minutes and are taught by professional actors and directors.
