Rugby Match Reports
Year 5 Blues vs Tower House, 10 - 15
It was another tight game for the Blues who came just short with the final score being 15-10. Again it wasn’t down to a lack of effort and probably one that could have gone either way as we were just short of the line on no less than three occasions. Two fantastic tries were scored by Tom Waring and William Parfitt but this was a real team effort from start to finish, the most impressive area of the match was the collective work and unity of the boys’ team spirit. Even when we went behind there was a real urgency and they kept themselves motivated and attacked at any opportunity, on another day they may well have scored a hatful of tries if it wasn’t for the opposition’s excellent resilience on their own try line.
Year 5 Barbarians vs Tower House, 15 - 20
The Year 5 Barbarians began their season on Friday with a hard fought contest against Tower House. The Barbarians showed impressive organisation and commitment in all aspects of the game, with only a late try preventing them from taking a draw. Special mention goes to Charlie Pentecost who scored a hat-trick of fine tries and to Sam Cannon who muddily emerged from the centre of every ruck and maul. It was a fine team performance that certainly did not deserve to end in defeat. Well done Barbarians!
Year 3 Blues vs Kew College, 13 – 12
The first victory of the season for the Year 3 Blues and they certainly deserved it. The match was played on a shorter pitch than the boys would have liked but this made the game all the more exciting with tries being scored throughout the match. The boys were incisive in attack and resolute in defence. The boys went blow for blow with Kew in the final moments, wrestling for the lead and scored the winning try in the final play of the match. A great game all round and well done to all the boys involved.
Year 3 Saxons vs Kew College, 3 - 7
The Year 3 Saxons had their second fixture of the season on Tuesday, a home game against Kew College. The game was a very even contest until the latter stages when the visitors scored some late tries to seal a seven to three victory. The Saxons performed extremely well in some challenging conditions and can take a great pride from a game they were unlucky to lose.
Year 4 Falcons vs Fulham Prep
Match 1, 10 - 20
It was evident the boys have been eagerly awaiting the first contact game of rugby of their school careers as tackle upon tackle was made throughout the first half and some very good rugby was played. Fulham made one quick break out on the wing which resulted in the only try of the first half. The second half started off at a much quicker pace and the boys started to explore the space on the pitch which resulted in some successive tries from both teams, with Matthieu Gillet scoring both of the Falcons’ tries. The game then closed up again as both teams resumed their big tackle ethos of the first half and the defences were hard to break. It is hard to single out boys for their individual performance as the whole team put in a big effort and should all be proud of themselves. It was a fantastic start to the rugby season and a great game of rugby which could have gone either way. Well done boys!
Match 2, 55 - 15
For their first competitive contact match for the school, you would have thought they had been playing for years! Such was the commitment and organisation that these boys trounced the Fulham Prep side 55-15, this was a display that the whole team can be proud of, the forwards got stuck in and retained possession and the backs ran hard and straight with the tries coming thick and fast with everyone contributing. Tim Daw, Zinny Diabate and captain Joseph Dormer, gave plenty of power up the middle and Billy Miller and Freddie Wilson shared five tries.
Year 5 Blues vs Fulham Prep, 10 - 20
This was truly a game of two halves! The Falcons Blues dominated the first 15 minutes with plenty of commitment, clearing the ball in rucks and mauls as well as tremendously hard tackling led by Oliver Daw. The boys went into the second half 10-5 to the good thanks to the excellent awareness of Nat Rudder scoring a double. Tower House then seemed to go up a gear and scored very early on and had the boys under the cosh for most of the second half. To the boys’ credit they held out for a long time but in the end Tower House scored on two more occasions running out 10-20 winners. The players should keep their heads up though as they are playing better rugby all the time.
Year 3 Blues vs St James, 12 - 11
The Blues continued their winning run with another hard fought victory over St James in arctic conditions on Thursday. Passing was down to a minimum with the conditions and thanks to more tremendous attacking play the boys came out on top. Adrian Gui showed how dangerous he can be with ball in hand and it was captain Hugh Young who ran in the winning try. Hopefully the boys will carry this form into the next half of term.
Year 4 vs St James, 20 - 55
The skies were as blue as the deep Atlantic Ocean.....unfortunately it was also as cold as the depths of the Atlantic Ocean! Not the best temperature to be playing contact rugby, however this didn’t stop the boys playing their hearts out and despite a heavy loss (55-20) the boys came off the pitch at the final whistle happy with their individual efforts. Tom Bonnar deserves a mention as his drive going forward with the ball in hand and efforts in tackling really stood out, as did Dougie Barber. Also Joshua Curtis was excellent at fly half doing his absolute best to organise the back line. Well done boys, keep up the positive attitude and progress that you are all making!
