Year 6 vs Kew Green, 1 – 4, 2 – 0 & 3 – 4

In a tough set of fixtures against Kew Green Year 6 battled hard and returned one positive result from the three games played.

The first match started badly with Kew Green scoring immediately, Kew’s striker reacting fastest to pounce on a rebound from the initial save. The boys worked hard but Kew used the width well to create space and took their chances effectively. The score was 3 – 0 at half time and the game could easily have turned into a rout. However the Falcons dug deep and produced a much more competitive performance, Sam Moon and Aidan Gibbons getting stuck in with some strong challenges. The second half was capped by a strike from distance by Tom Korn which found its way through the ‘keeper’s legs and into the net. This was just reward for the effort the boys put in during the second half.

In the second encounter, The Falcons Rangers’ crack troops, led by Field Marshall Baker, pitched into battle against the fearsome foe from Kew Green; this report is all that survives of the encounter. Colonel Gersh was first to draw blood: an opportunistic strike in the course of an early reconnaissance mission. Damaged but not dismayed, Kew Green swiftly rolled out the heavy artillery, establishing an advanced line wherefrom they peppered the Rangers’ redoubt with wayward volleys. A commanding presence, Sergeant Sharp marshalled the defensive line admirably; Major Atkinson and Captain Hussain responded decisively to all enemy incursions and were ably supported by tactical retreats from those further advanced: Lieutenant-Colonel Rudder and Lieutenant Herbert.  In desperation, Kew Green laid a last-ditch siege of Fortress Falcons, leaving but one of their number at base. This measure was to prove their undoing: a rampaging Falcons counter-attack found no resistance and Special Operative Bradley coolly administered the fatal blow.

In the final fixture the Year 6 Rangers played against Kew Green, a strong-looking and well-drilled side. The first half was very keenly contested and even on the run of play. Our boys took a deserved lead after five minutes through Freddie Miller following up on an attempt at goal by Zain Sayed-Kumar. The game evened up as the first half wore on and two defensive lapses saw the opposition go 2-1 up, before Freddie scored his second of the match just before half time to make it 2-2. A sluggish start from our boys in the first five minutes of the second half saw the opposition score twice for a 4-2 lead, leaving our boys a mountain to climb. The Falcons responded excellently, however, with Freddie and Armaan starting to dominate the game, and with five minutes to go Freddie scored his hat-trick to set up a grand stand finish at 4-3. The Falcons spent the last few minutes on the attack, forcing a series of corners, but they were just unable to get that equaliser. The final result was an evenly-fought 4-3 to Kew Green, but our boys can be proud of their fight-back, dominating the last ten minutes.

Year 5 vs Denmead, 1 -1, 2 – 3 & 0 - 8

The boys are really starting to play some good flowing football now and their quick passing and moving made it very difficult for the opposition to defend. Although it was 0-0 at halftime, we had created 3 or 4 good chances on goal only to be thwarted by some very good goalkeeping.

We kept the pressure on in the second half and got our reward with a fantastic pass bisecting the two defenders for William Bradvedt to score on second attempt after once again the ‘keeper blocked the first shot. Unfortunately the Denmead ‘keeper got injured and we had to finish the game with 6 a-side which made the game very open on a big pitch. Denmead were able to equalise in the final minute from a corner which hurt the boys in a game that they felt they had dominated and rightly so. It was a fantastic game and if the boys continue to make further big improvements as they have already then they would prove very difficult to beat for any school!

The Falcons Rangers came up against a well prepared outfit in the form of Denmead on Wednesday afternoon. The boys started slowly and found themselves 2 – 0 down after only ten minutes. They eased their way into the game and were looking more competitive as the half time whistle blew with Enforcers Alex Shaul and Max Hawkins-Burke starting to make their presence felt. This continued into the second half and allowed the attacking trio to express themselves higher up the pitch, Harry Crawford was a constant threat and it was he who released Fred Lollesgaard to dance around the last defender before driving the ball under the ‘keeper to halve the deficit. Unfortunately Denmead responded immediately but it was the Falcons who had the final say, Jonno Mackrill bravely getting his head to the ball from an Alex Shaul throw and the ball sailed over the goalkeeper and into the net. Well done to all the boys and particularly Will Parfitt who was tremendous in goal.
